Fungus Gnats: How to Get Rid of Them in Houseplant Soil for Good
Fungus gnats are the pest that makes you feel like your home is dirty even when your plants look fine. The little black flies are harmless and short-lived; the real problem is the larvae feeding in constantly moist soil, where they chew fine roots and open the door to rot. Fix the moisture and treat the soil, and the whole cycle collapses within a few weeks.
What fungus gnats look like
Fungus gnats are dark, mosquito-like flies about 3–4 mm long, most often Bradysia species in the family Sciaridae. They fly weakly, hover close to the soil surface, and rise up in a small cloud when you move the pot. You will also find them on windows and around lamps, and drowned in water glasses.
The larvae live in the top few centimeters of potting mix. They are translucent white, 4–6 mm long, with a shiny black head, and look like tiny threads of glass. You rarely see them unless you dig, though a slice of raw potato laid cut-side down on the soil for a day will draw them to the surface.
Damage on the plant itself is subtle. Seedlings and cuttings wilt or collapse at the soil line, and established plants may show slow growth, yellowing lower leaves, and poor vigor that is easy to blame on something else.
What fungus gnats are confused with
Fruit flies are the usual mix-up. They are stockier, tan, and hang around fruit bowls and bins rather than pots. Shore flies look similar to gnats but are chunkier, with short legs and pale spots on the wings; they breed in algae on wet trays and saucers and are treated the same way.
Springtails are small jumping creatures on the soil surface that leap when disturbed and never fly. They are harmless recyclers of decaying matter, though, like gnats, they signal soil that stays too wet.
Why fungus gnats show up
The larvae need constantly moist organic matter to survive. Peat-based potting mixes hold water for days, and if the top layer never dries, the eggs laid there hatch reliably. Gnats simply cannot breed in soil that dries out between waterings.
Most infestations arrive with a new plant or a bag of potting mix that was stored damp. From there, a single female laying a couple of hundred eggs starts a cycle that runs about 3–4 weeks at room temperature: eggs hatch in 3–6 days, larvae feed for around two weeks, and pupae emerge as adults a few days later.
Winter is peak season. Plants use less water when light is low, so pots that were fine in summer stay wet for a week or more, and a fixed watering schedule turns every pot into a nursery. Decaying leaves on the soil surface, self-watering pots, and mixes rich in compost or bark make it worse.

How to get rid of fungus gnats step by step

Let the soil dry. Stop watering until the top 3–5 cm (1–2 in) of mix is fully dry, and from then on water only when a finger pushed in to the second knuckle comes out dry. Trap the adults. Push yellow sticky traps into the soil of every pot, or lay them flat on the surface. Adults are drawn to yellow and get stuck before they can lay eggs. Replace the traps when they are covered. This does not end the infestation on its own, but it stops the next generation and shows you how fast the numbers are falling.

Drench with BTI. Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis is a bacterium that kills fly larvae and nothing else. Soak mosquito bits in water (about 4 tablespoons per 4 litres, steeped for 30 minutes and strained, or follow the label) and use that water for your next normal watering. Repeat every 5–7 days for 3–4 weeks so every hatch meets it.

Use a hydrogen peroxide drench if you need results today. Mix one part 3 percent hydrogen peroxide with four parts water and water the soil until it fizzes. It kills larvae on contact and is safe for roots at this dilution. It does not persist, so repeat weekly.

How to prevent fungus gnats
Water by soil feel, not by calendar, and cut back sharply in winter. Bottom-watering, or a moisture meter for large pots, keeps the top layer dry where the eggs would be laid.
Quarantine new plants for two weeks and drench them once with BTI as a precaution. Store opened bags of potting mix sealed and dry, and consider baking or freezing suspect mix before use.
Remove fallen leaves from the soil surface, empty saucers after watering, and keep self-watering pots for plants that genuinely like constant moisture. A layer of grit on the surface of every pot is a cheap permanent barrier.
