Spider Mites on Houseplants: How to Identify and Get Rid of Them

Spider mites are the pest most plant parents discover too late, because the mites themselves are smaller than a grain of salt. By the time fine webbing appears between leaves and stems, the colony has usually been feeding for weeks. The good news is that they are easy to confirm with a sheet of white paper and, caught early, easy to beat with water, soap, and humidity.

What spider mites look like

Spider mites are not insects at all but tiny arachnids, and the species you will meet indoors is almost always the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae. Adults measure about 0.5 mm, so what you notice first is the damage, not the pest.

The earliest sign is stippling: hundreds of pale yellow or silvery pinpricks on the upper leaf surface where individual cells have been sucked dry. Leaves take on a dusty, faded look, as if someone lightly sanded them. As feeding continues, leaves turn bronze or yellow, curl at the edges, and drop.

Fine webbing between leaf stems, along leaf edges, and in the growing tip is the giveaway that the population is large. Turn a leaf over and look closely: you may see tiny moving specks, pale yellow-green with two dark spots, or a fine grit of eggs and shed skins.

Why spider mites show up

Spider mites arrive on new plants, cut flowers, grocery produce, and even on clothing or pets after a walk. Every home has the occasional hitchhiker; what turns a hitchhiker into an infestation is the environment.

Dry, warm air is the trigger. Central heating in winter and air conditioning in summer both pull indoor humidity below 40 percent, and spider mites thrive there. How to get rid of spider mites step by step

  1. Isolate the plant. Move it at least a meter (3 ft) from other plants and check every neighbor with the paper test. Spider mites walk between touching leaves and drift on air currents.

  2. Prune the worst growth. Cut off heavily webbed or bronzed leaves and bag them. This removes most of the population and its eggs in one stroke. A plant can lose up to a third of its foliage and recover.

  3. Wash the plant. Take it to the shower or hose and rinse every leaf, top and bottom, with a firm spray of lukewarm water. Physically knocking mites and webbing off is more effective than any spray you apply afterward. For small plants, dunk the foliage in a bucket of water with a squirt of dish soap for a few minutes.

  4. Spray thoroughly. Once the leaves are dry, apply one of these, coating the undersides until they drip:

    • Neem oil: 5 ml cold-pressed neem per litre of lukewarm water with 1–2 ml of mild liquid soap as an emulsifier. Shake constantly while spraying.
    • Insecticidal soap (potassium fatty acids) at the label rate, typically 10–20 ml per litre.
    • Horticultural oil at about 10 ml per litre, which smothers mites and eggs alike.

    Spray in the evening or away from direct sun, and test one leaf 24 hours beforehand on sensitive plants such as calathea and ferns.

  5. Repeat every 5–7 days for at least 3 weeks. Eggs survive most sprays and hatch within 3–5 days, so a single treatment always fails. Rewash the plant before each spray if webbing returns.
